The 2024 general election saw strong voter turnout in Hernando County, with 77.55 percent of eligible voters voting in the election. This was an increase over the 2020 election, where 75 percent of eligible voters voted. However, comparisons to 2020 are difficult since it was a COVID-19-affected election where many people voted by mail.
The half-cent sales tax and one mil on property taxes for the Hernando County School District passed. While the county government’s one-cent sales tax for law enforcement, public safety, and transportation did not pass. The county government asked for a long-term increase that would expire in 30 years.
There were six constitutional amendments on the ballot. Both of the controversial constitutional amendments failed to reach the 60 percent threshold locally and at the state level. Amendment 3 was related to legalizing marijuana and limiting who could grow it. Amendment 4 sought to enshrine the ability to have an abortion into Florida’s constitution. The only two amendments that passed were the constitutional right to hunting and fishing and adjusting home property tax exemption for inflation.
President Donald J. Trump will return to the White House as he took the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, with a sizeable lead in Michigan and Nevada. He currently has 277 electoral votes, with 270 needed to win.
Many of the Florida and local winners were incumbents, with Rick Scott, Gus Bilirakis, Blaise Ingoglia, John Temple, Jeff Holcomb, John Allocco, Alice J. Charoonsak, and Nancy E. Feliu winning their races. Betty Erhard returned to the Brooksville City Council. The school board race featured two newcomers with Michelle Bonczek coming out on top.
All the judges were retained. There were two Florida Supreme Court justices and seven Fifth District Court of Appeal judges on the ballot and they all received more than 60 percent of the vote.
