Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Seminar Brings Resources, Inspiration to the Community

Grandparents raising grandchildren face unique challenges, from navigating school systems to staying current with technology. To support these caregivers, the Hernando County School District’s Parent Academy and the United Way of Hernando County hosted the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Seminar on November 8 at the PHSC Spring Hill Campus.

The event brought together 43 grandparents and 17 local vendors for a day filled with workshops, expert advice and community support. It underscored the invaluable role grandparents play in shaping the lives of their grandchildren while providing practical tools to help them thrive.

Attendees participated in hands-on workshops led by experts across a range of topics.

Behavioral Health: Sandra Marrero, behavioral health manager at BayCare, outlined resources for mental health support, while Jill Kolasa, director of student services, delved into 504 plans and school discipline. Anna Jensen, director of exceptional student education, provided guidance on IEPs and support for students with special needs.

Technology: Jesse Diaz and Hernando County Schools’ Academic Services team demonstrated how grandparents can use district communication platforms and AI tools to support learning. Leah Stanton from the Dawn Center offered insights on navigating technology safely, focusing on preventing online risks like teen dating violence.

Legal Services: Lizzie Johnson, Esq., of Community Legal Services, spoke about grandparents’ rights in kinship care, while Brian Brijbag, Esq., of Brijbag Law, shared advice on legal guardianship and resources for families with special needs children.

The event also featured an inspiring keynote address from Superintendent Ray Pinder, who shared his vision for the district and emphasized families’ vital role in student success.

The seminar was made possible through the support of community partners who generously provided food and financial contributions. Nikki Bell and the Win the Day Foundation served breakfast, while Glory Days Grill supplied lunch. Culver’s of Brooksville treated attendees to ice cream cups, and Starbucks provided coffee to keep everyone energized. Sinkhole Titan and Krueger City offered financial support to ensure the event’s success.

Beyond the workshops and presentations, the event fostered a sense of connection. Grandparents had opportunities to interact with local vendors, engage in meaningful conversations and take home valuable resources tailored to their unique needs.
