The Hernando Sun and Wild Zebra Media have released a documentary on Powell Middle School’s journalism program, which produces the school’s newspaper, The Powell GROWL. Readers of The Hernando Sun may be familiar with The Powell Growl, as we print it in The Hernando Sun on a monthly basis during the school year.
With the declining numbers of journalism programs and school newspapers, Hernando Sun felt it important to highlight Powell’s extremely successful journalism program led by journalism teacher Derek LaRiviere. The documentary is 16 minutes long and shows how Mr. LaRiviere’s classroom becomes a mini newsroom, complete with departments such as photography, features, layout and sports. Most importantly, it captures the program’s deep impact on the Powell community and the students. The Hernando Sun hopes that Powell’s journalism program will inspire others to keep journalism education alive.
We send a big thank you to Wild Zebra Media for producing the documentary.
Watch for the February issue of The Powell GROWL in this week’s Hernando Sun.
