PHSC Announces New and Revised Courses

On Feb. 18, Pasco-Hernando State College held a District Board of Trustees Meeting at their Spring Hill campus. Midway through the conference, Daniel Powell, PHSC Vice President of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer, presented the Council of Academic Affairs’ proposal on adjustments to the college’s curriculum.

The changes to these courses and programs were approved by the CAA during a meeting on January 31 of this year. The following classes were reviewed and approved by the board of trustees during Tuesday’s meeting.

New Course: College Credit

  • Professional Nursing Practice – NUR3080C (becomes effective in Fall of 2025)
  • Interview to Corrections – CJK0301 (Summer 2025)
  • Communication for Correctional Officers – CJK0306 (Summer 2025)
  • Intake and Release – CJK0321 (Summer 2025)
  • Supervision in a Correctional Facility – CJK0324 (Summer 2025)
  • Supervising Correctional Populations – CJK0326 (Summer 2025)
  • Shift Management and Safety – CJK0327 (Summer 2025)
  • Incidents and Emergencies in Correctional Facilities – CJK0336 (Summer 2025)
  • Legal for Correctional Officers – CJK0355 (Summer 2025)

Course Revisions: College Credit

  • College Geometry – MTG2206 (Fall 2025)
  • Jogging and Distance Walking II – PEM2146 (Summer 2025)
  • Pathways in Mathematical Literacy – MAT1100 (Fall 2025)
  • Intermediate Algebra – MAT1033 (Fall 2025)
  • Marketing for Managers – MAR3803 (Summer 2025)
  • Webpage Design – CGS1820 (Summer 2025)
  • Nursing Theoretical Concepts – NUR3119 (Fall 2025)

Course Revisions: Non-Credit / Continuing Workforce Education

  • Primary Flight Training I – NCJ0028

Course Fee Revisions:

  • EMS2620: Paramedic I (Fall 2025) – The previous cost of $189.00 was increased to $216.75 due to an “FISDAP Fee increase with additional testing added to packet,” Powell’s presentation stated.
  • EMS2624: Paramedic III (Fall 2025) – A new $315.00 Paramedic Exam Review Course fee was added to prepare PHSC’s students for the National Registry Exams.
  • FFP0030: Firefighter I (Summer 2025) – This course also saw an extra cost included for the replacement of the “in-house” Physical Ability Test (PAT) with the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), “which is a better predictor of an applicant’s ability to perform basic firefighting tasks,” the presentation continued.

  • Correctional Officer Career Certificate (Summer 2025)
  • Corrections Basic Recruit Training for Special Operations Recruits Career Certificate (Summer 2025)
  • Crossover form Law Enforcement Officer to Correctional Officer Career Certificate (Summer 2025)
  • Crossover from Correctional Probation Officer to CMS Correctional Basic Recruit Training Career Certificate (Summer 2025)
  • Crossover Correctional Probation Officer to Law Enforcement Officer Career Certificate (Summer 2025)
  • Associate in Science Internet Services Technology Program (Summer 2025)
    RN to BSN Program (Fall 2025)

Vice President Powell noted that the new courses were made to align with mandates from the state. The revisions were done “mostly to remove unnecessary [prerequisites] and streamline some of the programs and also to update some of the learning outcomes in some of the courses,” he added.
