A wanted suspect was shot during a shootout with police today at Brooksville Square around 2:45 p.m.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tip that the suspect was spotted near Dickey’s Barbecue Pit and Anytime Fitness off Cortez Boulevard.
Upon arrival, law enforcement approached the suspect, who attempted to flee and fired at a deputy. The deputy returned fire, striking the suspect. Despite being shot, the suspect continued running west for about a quarter to half a mile before being apprehended. The deputy was not injured.
Authorities believe the suspect was wounded during the altercation and transported to the hospital. The extent of his injuries remains unknown. His firearm was left at the scene as he fled.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be taking over the criminal investigation.
