PHSC played their last scrimmage game on Wednesday the 26th against St. Leo University. Over the preseason they have had time to focus on defensive tactics and polish their offensive techniques. This was also an opportunity for the players to see what it was like play against a larger division II team.
Some people may feel that these scrimmages do not count for anything, but they are crucial in the development of a team and players. Going up against St. Leo University was one of those learning experiences.
“We are undersized for rebound and defensive…there is a big difference between Division II Jr. College vs four year degree college… you can tell the difference,” Coach Jones explained. “But you can’t let that division dictate how you’re supposed to play.”
Wilchadson Charmant, Cedric Perry, Charles Isaac, Dylan Bailey and Destin Dunton started the first period against the Lions. With missed shots and difficulty controlling the rebounds reflected on the scoreboard during the first period PHSC 21 - ST LEO 55. The second period of the game did show some improvement with PHSC 39 and ST LEO, 54. Final 109 St. Leo - 60 PHSC
“I think they did a better effort in the second half than the first half... and that is part of getting used to playing big colleges... That is why we play these games so they can get used to playing better talent than they used to play in high school,” Coach Jones said. “We love this because it exposes them to come to a four year college and to see how it is at a big level.”
The first game of the season starts at 7pm Wednesday night against Job Corp on their home court. PHSC had dominated Job Corp last season. With wins on November 12, 2015 (103-52) and January 19, 2016 (108-84), the beginning of the season may have a good start for PHSC.
