Safe Route to School sidewalk projects scheduled for FY 2022

August 31, 2017 - 20:58

The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a board of combined Hernando and Citrus County elected officials. The federal government mandates that a local planning board helps in overseeing that transportation projects are designed and completed.

On Aug. 15, 2017, the MPO received an update on upcoming Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) projects in the Citrus and Hernando County area. The first project, set for Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) fiscal year (FY) 2019 will be in Crystal River, on Turkey Oak Drive, for a sidewalk leading to Crystal River High School.

Hernando County has two projects scheduled for FDOT’s FY 2022. Fox Chapel Middle School will see sidewalks built along Freeport Drive. Sidewalks on Raley Road will help students reach Eastside Elementary safely.

All three projects are currently in the PE, or preliminary engineering, phase. It is where the objectives (in this case, providing a safe path for students who need to walk to school) are put into a plan or design. The plan is then submitted to FDOT for review and approval.
