The Homeschool Option in Hernando County

September 07, 2017 - 00:38

Have you ever thought about homeschooling your kids but had no idea where to start? Long gone are the days of parents spending countless hours with books and workbooks going through page after page. In today’s technically advanced time homeschool can open an entire world you didn’t know your kids needed. Sure homeschooling isn’t for everyone and lots of people and kids love what they get in the local public or private school, but it you have wondered about this third option, it offers many different varieties.
I recently attended the open house for Home Circle, the local homeschool group that provides a wealth of activities, support and understanding to navigate your way through a homeschool education. Today you have many options when it comes to homeschooling. Of course you can do the traditional method mentioned above, but now you have the option of a co-op which blends in class options for learning. You have the virtual method which can be great for high school students who also want to get ahead on college with dual enrollment. If you aren’t sure what exactly you want to teach, there are programs which provide you with the tools to guide you, while other programs provide one day a week on site teaching for your young students.

What about the need for social interaction? I know this is very important to kids, especially older middle and high school students. The Home Circle group is made up of almost 200 families throughout the county and they schedule fun, and educational field trips throughout the year. Allowing your kids to make friends and build those relationships all while making memories on their educational journey. They have a formal graduation every year, as well as homecoming, prom and a yearbook. There is a small yearly membership due, but the benefits you get far exceed the small fee paid.

Home Circle is a faith based homeschool group that started in August of 1986, with four moms who met in their homes for playdates, unit studies and attended field trips together. They meet the third Tuesday of every month at Vineyard Christian Church in Brooksville. So if you think this might be an option you want to consider, you can access their website which provides tons of information, ranging from the state homeschooling laws, helpful resources and upcoming events.
