SPARROW DRIVE WEEKI WACHEE
PRESERVE SUNDAY, JAN. 21, 2017 9AM-1PM
Widespread in North America, this melodious bird is among the most familiar of birds in the US.
Volunteers will walk in a line, elbow to elbow, to flush sparrows into a row of mist nets. Once the birds have flown into the nets, they will be banded, and then released.
This project has provided important documentation that the same sparrows, which migrate to the northern states during their nesting season, are returning (and being recaptured) in the same spot in subsequent years.
This is a fun and educational event that adds to scientific understanding of what is happening with these species. If you enjoy wildlife and the outdoors, there is an another opportunity to participate in a sparrow drive on Feb. 4.
Weeki Wachee Preserve is located at 2345 Osowaw Blvd., Spring Hill.
BEGINS SATURDAY, JAN. 7-10, 2017,
8 AM to 5PM
Designed to demonstrate a dog’s willingness to work with his handler in a variety of situations, agility is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training, and teamwork.
Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. Courses can be complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important.
Agility is a great form of exercise for both dog and handler and a fun way for them to bond.
