Hernando Weight loss challenge begins January

The Great Hernando Weight Loss Challenge will take place from Jan. 14 until March 25. The goal of the community initiative is for 1,000 residents and visitors, working in teams of 10, to each lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks, for a collective community weight loss of 10,000 pounds. The kickoff event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Hernando County Mining Association Enrichment Center at 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., Brooksville, a different location than previously announced. A $500 award will be given to the participant who loses the most weight. Awards will also be given to the team that loses the most weight and to the team with the most creative name. The Awards Celebration Party will take place at the Anderson Snow Park Pavilion on Saturday, April 8, 2017. The cost to participate is $10 per person. Hernando County Utilities Water Awareness

Hernando County residents are invited to attend “Save Water! Save Money!” on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 10am – 12 noon at the new Hernando County Utilities Administration Building, 15365 Cortez Blvd, Brooksville, FL 34613.

$50 Investment Club set to meet Jan. 4

PHSC offers new ED2GO online courses

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) in partnership with Ed2Go is offering new instructor-led individual and bundled series online courses geared specifically for lifelong learning students. The bundled courses are comprehensive programs that combine similar classes at a reduced price. Students receive expert instruction and the opportunity to interact with fellow participants in an online classroom format. Book Drive to benefit People Helping People

UUCIP Is conducting a Book Drive to support People Helping People from Jan. 1 through March 31, 2017.
The Unitarian Universalist Church in the Pines in Weeki Wachee is asking for your unwanted books to help People Helping People (PHP) better serve the under-employed and homeless of Hernando County.
The PHP constituents who are taking PHP job-training classes would appreciate practical and reference books such as how to compose a business letter, various computer skills for dummies (Word, spreadsheets, PageMaker, PowerPoint, Excel, etc), cookbooks, and textbooks at any level in math and English. All donations are tax-deductible.

The Suncoast Credit Union is awarding three $2,000 scholarship awards to high school seniors in Hernando County through the Hernando County Education Foundation. Volunteers sought for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters serving Hernando County is seeking Hernando County residents 55 and older to become volunteers. Our biggest challenge right now is recruiting Bigs to mentor children in elementary school from Kindergarten through Fourth grade. In both our community-based program and our school-based program the need for male mentors is critical. State of Florida launches new recruitment website

The State of Florida is moving to a new and improved People First recruitment site. The proposed implementation date is January 2017. The new recruitment site is designed to attract high-level talent to Florida’s government positions in an effort to cultivate a high-performing and strong workforce. Applicants interested in working for the state will be able to search and apply for employment opportunities in an improved, streamlined platform. Free items for women undergoing chemo

Boutique of Hope has intimate items for women undergoing chemotherapy or radiation and wish to have hats, bras, scarves, forms or wigs. If you have no more than $1,970 a month income and have a diagnosis of breast cancer you qualify for these items. Stop in at the clinic, 5244 Commercial Way, Spring Hill and pick up an application and while you are there, visit our Boutique of Hope.
Volunteers staff the Boutique of Hope Tuesdays and Wednesdays and can qualify you between 10 am and 2 pm. with proof of income, photo ID and then you can chose the items you wish. We are also seeking new volunteers at the boutique, For more information call (352) 438-4143.

Volunteers sought for Animal Services

Volunteers are needed to help socialize the dogs and cats, transport and assist with offsite adoption events, help with bathing/grooming, walk dogs and most of all love and play with the animals.

Hernando Youth Orchestra has instruments for loan

HYO has some instruments to loan to young musicians ages 6 to 21. HYO’s low-cost music lessons are a perfect way to develop your musical skills before joining the orchestra.

Access Health Care opens new blood drawing stations

Access Health Care announces that it has now established a number of blood drawing stations at various locations in Hernando County. The blood draw is performed by an Access Health Care phlebotomist. No appointment is necessary. Simply stop at the draw station located closest to your home or workplace from Monday to Friday.
