Check It Out! Author Talk, Book Signing with Sharon Preston-Folta
Come meet the author of “Little Satchmo – Living in the Shadow of my Father Louis Daniel Armstrong” — Sharon Preston-Folta, the only child of world-famous trumpeter and jazz musician Louis Armstrong.
The Hernando County Public Library System invites you to visit the Spring Hill Branch Library (9220 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, FL 34608) on Thursday, June 29 to listen to Sharon Preston-Fola talk about her book telling her story of what it was like to grow up as the unacknowledged child of a world famous entertainer.
It is widely believed that Louis Armstrong died childless in 1971, after a 29-year marriage to his fourth wife, Lucille Armstrong. However, Sharon Preston-Fola says she is the daughter and only child of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, the architect of one of America’s most important contributions to the art of music. She wants to tell her story now. She believes she matters and wants her grand- and great-grand children to understand this story.
“I have waited my entire lifetime to say publicly that I am his daughter,” she says. ”I have lived with the pain for what seems like a lifetime.”
Written in conjunction with New York Times bestselling author Denene Millner, the book tells the story of what it was like to grow up as an unacknowledged child of the world famous entertainer and why the author finally chose to write this book and claim her heritage.
To the rest of the world, jazz and Satchmo enthusiasts in particular, this is, indeed, quite a revelation.
“I am not a gold digger or some money-hungry, long lost relative looking to sink my claws into a jazz legend’s fortunes,” she says.
“I am a daughter. A human being whose flesh and bone and vein and sinew is the sum of two parts—Lucille “Sweets” Preston, a small-town Harlem girl who made it big as a dancer on the jazz circuit at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, and her lover of more than two decades, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, the architect of one of America’s most important contributions to the art of music.”
Preston-Fola says it’s about legacy. …and she is stepping out of the shadows to tell her story.
The presentation begins at 5 p.m. After an informal discussion, Preston-Folta will have signed copies of her book available for purchase. For more information, check out www.littlesatchmo.com or contact: Sheryl Fell, (352) 754-4824; email firstname.lastname@example.org
LITTLE BUGS - BIG TREES
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 2017
Species of bark and ambrosia beetles, or the fungi they carry, can contribute to major diseases in trees. These diseases can cause major disruptions to forest ecosystems, and the loss of valuable wood and tree products.
Join a presentation given by the Hernando County Extension Office at the Spring Hill Branch Library to learn more about these important insects — how to recognize these insects and what you can do to protect your trees. The presentation is free and open to the public. To register, contact Lilly at email@example.com or phone 352-754-4433
