Several members of our Chapter have been actively engaged in Hernando County’s Strategic Plan process—whether by attending the Community Engagement Session in February or providing input through the Community Feedback Survey.
You still can help! April 4 will be the last Community Engagement Session before a draft plan is presented in May. Please plan to attend. The facilitators will lead community members through review of the draft vision, objectives, and recommendations developed to date. If we want to see long-term commitments to native habitat protection, we must show up in numbers and make our voices heard.
It will be helpful to review the minutes from the February workshop. To protect our native plant populations into the future, we will need to continue to endorse the revival of the Hernando County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) program and to promote participation in the Florida Forever and Rural and Family Lands protection programs. We will also need to pay attention to recommendations re: the Comprehensive Plan. It has also been suggested that a designated Urban Service Boundary would help constrain sprawl hence further fragmentation of natural areas.
