Forestry of Upland Mixed Forest, The Science and Conservation of the Trees of this Declining Plant Community
by Vince Morris, Resource Administrator, Florida Forest Service
As Florida development continues apace, much attention goes to protection of our beleaguered wetlands and vanishing sandhill landscapes. At the edges, however, remnants of Upland Mixed Forest linger, primarily in ecotones between sandhill or upland pine and upland hardwood forest. Our speaker is uniquely qualified to address the key tree species of this habitat and what is being done to preserve them.
About our Speaker: Vince Morris is a founding member of our FNPS Chapter. Born and raised in Livermore, California, Vince attended Humboldt State University and got a B.S. in Forest Resource Management in 1987. After a stint in Peace Corps Guatemala, and Nature Conservancy in Sacramento, he moved to Florida in 1996 and worked at the Withlacoochee Forestry Center as County Forester, Ecology Forester, Ecology Unit Leader, and now Resource Administrator. His special passions are prescribed burning, red-cockaded woodpecker management, invasive species control and now soapberries. He also volunteers at Russell Street Park in Brooksville. He also likes running, bike riding and playing in a rock band called Rogue Runners.
