Dukes Proposes ESL Funds to Remove Invasive Plants in Hernando Beach

Commissioner Wayne Dukes shared photos with the Board of County Commissioners of lead trees and other invasive plants along canals and marshland in Hernando Beach. The trees are all on county property, growing along the right of way and obscuring the water. Commissioner Dukes stated that property owners usually keep their yards mowed, preventing the trees from taking hold.

Many may recall that determining the Sheriff's office budget for the current fiscal year was not a smooth process. The county discussed implementing a Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU) for the Sheriff's office on two occasions which would give the office its own line item on the tax bill. The Sheriff has been in opposition to this move, stating it puts all of the burden on those who pay property taxes.

The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners welcomed U.S. Representative Richard Nugent to their regular meeting on February 23, 2016. Congressman Nugent spoke to the Board on behalf of Arlene Sollis, who traveled to the Congressman’s Washington, D.C. office to plead with him for assistance in expediting construction of a sidewalk and crosswalk along Quality Drive in Spring Hill. The sidewalk and crosswalk are needed for residents of the Vista Grand senior living community and children walking to and from Suncoast Elementary School.

Dispute Resolution Likely Between City and County

The City of Brooksville annexed 9 properties on December 7, 2015. The County has officially challenged 5 of the proposed property annexations. The annexed properties being challenged consist of the Grace World Outreach Church property, the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church property, the Griffin property and the Hernando County Housing Authority property. The Brooksville Christian Church property is also being annexed by the city and challenged by the county.

Hernando County to Begin Speculative Building Program

Back in October 2015, the Board of County Commissioners directed staff to look into a speculative building program aimed at encouraging growth of the manufacturing sector within Hernando County. In speculative building, as the name implies, there is not an end user. There is no designated tenant or business to use the space that was constructed. The end user for the building is found after construction. It is meant to encourage a certain type of economic growth within a community.
