Composition Activity for High School: ELA.9.C.1.2) Write narratives using narrative techniques, varied transitions, and a clearly established point of view.
Read the column by Steve Goodwin on pg. A-8. Write a story of 500 words or more describing in detail a situation that would involve being prepared with such essentials as clean water, non-perishable food, and medical supplies for an extended period of time. This could be an actual situation like Hurricane Idalia or a fictional scenario. Describe how you would prepare and what the consequences might be if you didn’t prepare.

Vocabulary activity for Elementary School: (ELA.5.V.1.3) Use context clues, figurative language, word relationships, reference materials, and/or background knowledge to determine the meaning of multiple-meaning and unknown words and phrases, appropriate to grade level.
Read the article on pg. A-1 about Three Oaks Veterinary Clinic. Define the meaning or find a synonym for each of the following words without using a dictionary (if possible). Use the context of the word to help you. Also, write down the part of speech that each word is:
- legacy
- instill
- encompass
- stint
- embody
- full-fledged
- dissimilar
- iconic
- credentials
- mentor
Extra Credit: Use each word in a sentence. You can use more than one of these words in a sentence if you like.

Composition Activity for Elementary School: (ELA.C.1.4) Read the article on pg. B-1 about insects. Then write an original composition of at least 300 words about insects using some of the information in the article and at least one other outside source. It can be a book or an article on the internet.

History Activity for Middle School: (SS. 8.A.3.16) Examine key events in Florida history as each impacts this era of American history.
Read the article on page B-1, 8 about Hub Williams and the role of the Brooksville Regulators in his death. Then, write an essay about vigilantism during this time period, and how and why it developed.
Extra Credit: Research the lives of other well-known outlaws, such as Billy the Kid or Jesse James. Write a 400-word essay comparing their lives to Hub Williams’ life.

Science activity for Middle School: (SC.5.L.17.1) Compare and contrast adaptations displayed by animals and plants that enable them to survive in different environments, such as life cycle variations, animal behaviors, and physical characteristics.
Read the article on page B-1 about insects and answer the following questions in complete sentences (you might need to look outside the article for some of the answers):
- Where did Ms. Herden go to study these insects?
- Name two other places where any one of these insects is found.
- What important part does the thistle plant play in the life cycle of these insects?
- What important part do these insects play in the environment?
- What are “lifers?”
- What do you think would happen if any or all of these species went extinct?
