SWFWMD tracks wetland impact and restoration

The Southwest Florida Water Management District sent a letter to County Administrator Leonard Sossamon, informing him of their responsibility to track permitted wetland impacts, mitigation and habitat restoration activities in areas under their purview. The letter explains that since 1984, there have been 24.4 acres of impacts in Hernando County while 1,189.2 acres of wetlands and adjacent upland habitat have been restored or created.” Statewide within the same time period, 4,556 acres of wetland habitat was impacted through the permitting program, while 33,293 acres of wetland habitat and adjacent uplands were restored by the District.
