Property Exchange to Benefit Reversion to Two Way Streets in Brooksville

Cliff Taylor, City Attorney stated that the City of Brooksville and the Housing authority have been discussing the benefits of the property exchange for roughly a year. The parcels in question are a 3 acre parcel owned by the City and a 10 acre parcel within city limits on the SE side of Hillside Estates owned by the Housing Authority. The 10 acre property borders the Good Neighbor Trail.

City of Brooksville Provides Some Support to HC Fairgrounds July 4th Celebration

Richard Klimas with Hernando County Fair Association spoke to the Brooksville City Council about the upcoming July 4th celebration at the Hernando County Fairgrounds.
He stated that they reached out to the community and the community has helped out considerably with the fireworks display. So far they have acquired $11,000 out of the $15,000 they are aiming towards.

Saxon Manor Update: C-4 Zoning Approved for their 7.7 A property

Brooksville City Council voted to rezone approximately 7.7 acres located at the south side of E. Liberty Street approximately 265’ east of its intersection with S. Saxon Avenue from the current zoning of R-3 (High Density Residential) to a zoning designation of C-4 (Neighborhood Commercial).

The second reading of the resolution to rezone this property was approved on June 15 giving Saxon Manor the ability to use their newly constructed “Shabby Chic” Barn as a wedding venue.

HCSO Publishes FY 2015-2016 Budget

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has published their budget for FY 2015-2016. In a letter to the BOCC the sheriff highlighted cost savings programs that they have implemented. One such cost saving change was hiring a full time Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Sheriff Nienhuis stated that he estimates a savings of $70,000 and 344% more mental service hours provided. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office has agreed to temporarily house federal detainees which will result in approximately $100,000 worth of revenue per year.

Lake Lindsey United Methodist Church Fire is Arson, Suspect Awaiting Arrest Warrant

This past Sunday, Hernando Sun reported on the Lake Lindsey United Methodist church fire. We spoke to Rhonda Lillie, a member of the church who was surprised by the turn of events. We also spoke with Chis Sloane Battalion Chief of Hernando County Fire Rescue who stated that there was no structural damage suffered, just smoke and water damage. He also said that the ATF and State Fire Marshal are investigating the incident. It turns out that investigators identified the incident as arson and a suspect is awaiting arrest.

Improved Pass Rates for State Science, History and Civics Assessments

Hernando County students earned recognition from Commissioner Pam Stewart for their improved performance on state science, U.S. History and civics assessments in 2015. Total fifth graders who passed science assessments increased 4 percentage points, and total eighth graders who passed science assessments increased 3 percentage points. Total high school students who passed the U.S. History end-of-course exam increased 3 percentage points. Proficiency rates on these three assessments exceeded state averages.

Lightning Strike in High Point Subdivision

A mobile home was struck by lightning this afternoon, June 17, in the High Point Subdivision at 12389 Conde Dr. A homeowner called in a fire at the residence. The fire was contained to the exterior wall of the mobile home and the breaker panel. There was approximately $5000 worth of damages. The homeowner was able to reduce the damage of the fire with a portable fire extinguisher before help arrived. They will be staying with family tonight.

Hernando County Supervisor of Elections and Hernando County Association of Realtors have formed a partnership to help the Elections office with their ongoing mission of promoting the vote in Hernando County. Move Your Vote is a voter outreach program to help educate new homeowners about registering to vote or updating their current voter information in Hernando County.

Fire at Lake Lindsey United Methodist Church

At 10:19 am a driver with the OnStar system alerted the Hernando County Fire Department of smoke emanating from Lake Lindsey United Methodist Church on 476, Lake Lindsey Road. The Fire Department arrived 5 minutes later at 10:24am. In total, trucks from multiple stations brought 10,000 gallons of water, but fortunately not that much was needed. The Fire Department was able to contain the fire quickly and did not reach beyond the sanctuary.

Help relieve Hernando County animal shelter overcrowding

(Brooksville, FL) Hernando County Animal Services (HCAS) has recently been inundated with dogs, cats and other animals. The shelter is currently beyond capacity and in crisis mode. Adopters and rescues are needed to help get these animals into loving furever homes.

“We have 58 dog kennels and we are over our limit by 34 dogs,” Shannon Finch, shelter coordinator explained. “The shelter is also caring for numerous fish, nursing mamma cats and babies, under aged kittens, chickens, ducks and a goat.”
