Improvements and Expansion En Route for Transit System

In an effort to improve Hernando County’s bus transit system, the Board of County Commissioners came to a consensus to provide matching funds for transit enhancements using the Ninth cent local option fuel tax. Since this tax will be dedicated to funding the transit enhancements instead of the road pavement management program as it does currently, Commissioners plan to replace that funding by increasing the 1-5 gas tax by 3 cents, bringing it up to the max of 5 cents.

Legislation Impacting Hernando County

In the 2015 state legislative session, five bills passed both the house and senate that could have an impact in Hernando County. There were also some bills that didn’t pass which could have had negative financial impacts, which the county will continue to watch. Southern Strategy Group representatives, Ms. Laura Boehmer and Mr. Shawn Foster presented the Board of County Commissioners with information regarding these bills at the May 26, 2015 meeting.

Hernando County Elections Office to Purchase New Voting Equipment for 2016

Hernando County will update their voting system in time for the 2016 Election Cycle. Supervisor of Elections Shirley Anderson announced that she will begin contract negotiations with Dominion Voting Systems, one of the two companies who submitted a bid.

“We are very excited to continue our working relationship with Dominion Voting Systems. They have provided a reliable tabulation system and excellent customer service to Hernando County since 1998,”stated Supervisor Anderson.

PRYOR, AMY b. 1974 was arrested on 06/03/2015 18:44 for DISORDERLY INTOXICATION. Ms. Pryor, intoxicated showed up at a residence in Weeki Wachee attempting to forcibly enter and threatened the lives of those inside. The defendant was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail where she was issued a court date of 07/01/2015 and is being held in lieu of a $500 bond.

The act prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation.

Michael Harrison Troop 442 is now an Eagle Scout

Appreciation for the accomplishments and public service by Michael Harrison in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout was officially proclaimed in a resolution by the Hernando Board of County Commissioners on May 26th, 2015. Mr. Harrison is a Senior at Springstead High School and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 442. He recently refurbished the wooden platform, bench and fencing at Spring Hill Botanical Garden.

His Court of Honor ceremony will be held on June 6, 2015 at Community Fellowship Church in Spring Hill.

SWFWMD Staff Recommending Headquarters Move to Tampa

An email sent out by SWFWMD Executive Director Robert Beltran, P.E., BCEE, on Friday May 15 informed staff there will be a presentation and resolution on the agenda to designate the Tampa Service Office as the District’s headquarters. Currently, the Hernando County Office serves as the District’s principal office and has been for over 50 years.

The lobbyist for the City of Brooksville, Shawn Foster of Sunrise Consulting Group stated at their Council Meeting, “I’ve been doing this for 18 years and this was the most interesting session I think we’ve ever had.” Very few bills were actually passed due to a dispute between the House and Senate over medicaid expansion. The session was dismissed without passing a budget and the deadline to pass the budget is June 30th.

Time Crunch for the Half Cent Sales Tax Special Election

At the May 5th School Board Workshop, school board members debated what type of election to run for the half cent sales tax referendum. Supervisor of Elections Shirley Anderson stated that she could do a special election in early September 2015 but it is not feasible for her to do a special election any later since she has to prepare new voting machines for the 2016 primary elections and it takes at least 6 months to train poll workers after they acquire the machines.
