Human Trafficking- Modern Day Slavery

Slavery was abolished in the U.S. in 1865 when the 13th amendment was ratified and adopted into our constitution. The 13th amendment states “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude… shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” So that means slavery no longer happens in our country, right? I mean have you ever actually met a slave in your lifetime? Or a slave-owner for that matter?

200lbs of Marijuana seized from airplane

Some fast acting and lots of cooperation between local and federal agents led to the seizure of 197 pounds of marijuana in Brooksville late Monday night. Around 10:30 pm, The Department of Homeland Security Investigations Department alerted our Hernando County Sheriff’s Office of a suspicious aircraft entering the airspace over our county. By 10:45 pm, a sheriff’s deputy searching Brooksville-Tampa Bay regional airport spotted the 1979 Beech Baron Twin engine plane pulling into a hangar and the door shutting. Backup arrived shortly thereafter. Homeland Security showed up as well.

Review: Over the River and Through the Woods

Family, Faith, and Food are three important themes in Over the River and Through the Woods, a play by Joe DiPietro, and the latest show at Stagewest Community Playhouse. It’s a play about life and the struggle for independence and autonomy versus love of family and tradition. It’s about human nature, our idiosyncrasies, and the choices we make.

Addressing methamphetamine usage in Hernando County

It’s no secret- Hernando County has a huge Meth problem. It’s been growing rapidly and giving the county a bad reputation. A quick scan of local news headlines shows how prevalent this problem is. In December, a meth lab was found inside a local retirement community and a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of Bayfront Hospital was seen smoking meth in her hospital bed- while on oxygen. In January, a father and daughter team in Brooksville were arrested for meth-related crimes and the county had more than 10 separate arrests made for possession of methamphetamine.

Eat fat and lose weight?

Along with the New Year come the resolutions to get healthy and lose weight. If you’re like me, you have tried every diet imaginable. You probably think you have heard it all. Well, there may be something you might not have heard of. Did you know that fat can be good for you? The Ketogenic Diet is a low carb, low sugar, moderate protein, and high fat diet that turns your body into a fat burning machine. Most of us consume a lot of sugar and carbs which our keeps our bodies in a constant state of glycosis which basically means our bodies are burning off sugar, not fat.

Ribbon Cutting at Eli’s Café: Hernando County celebrates a local “Home away from home”

Earlier this month, the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Spring Hill restaurant, Eli’s Café. Located in The Shoppes at Spring Hill on US 19, this restaurant is a convenient place to get a good home-cooked meal and family fun. All the food is made from scratch- absolutely nothing frozen. Many of the recipes have been handed down from owner Eli Sherman’s mother and grandmother. The cafe feature Boars Head meat and cheeses as well as a wide array of tempting breakfast and lunch delights.

For months you have been reading articles I’ve written about different plays in the community, but what is it really like to be part of the cast? Well recently I was given the opportunity to audition for Fiddler on the Roof and even though I don’t have the best singing voice, I was awarded a part of the chorus. It’s been 16 years since I’ve been on stage and even though some things have changed, mainly technology, most has stayed the same. Being a part of community theatre is demanding, and you don’t get paid, but it is an amazing experience. It’s exhausting, nerve-wracking and fun.

Judah and the Lion: walking by faith

As a Faith writer, I decided to put my faith into practice recently and see how far it would get me. If you listen to any of the local pop or rock radio stations, you’re likely to be familiar with a group called Judah and the Lion. They’re from Nashville, Tennessee and recently played a concert in Tampa- the 97x Next Big Thing. My daughter and I absolutely love their music and I decided to believe that I would get to meet them. Originally I was hoping to simply meet them and say “hi” during the concert but as it turns out they decided to grant me an interview.

Explore Prophetic Art

Wine and painting places are popping up everywhere lately. It’s an awesome idea- It’s even how I first realized I was an artist- but now they have become a dime a dozen. Prophetic Art Unleashed in Brooksville is different. They are not your average wine and painting place. This innovative studio uses The Holy Spirit instead of alcohol to unleash the inner artist in its patrons. Owner Diana Campo says that she’s not a classically trained artist- she’s just like you and me. Despite never taking art classes she creates these masterpieces with so much depth and meaning.
