Perpetrators of recent bank robberies arrested, one killed

Bank robberies have been on the rise in Hernando County and surrounding areas lately. On Sept. 20, 2017, the BB&T Bank located at 5331 Spring Hill Drive in Spring Hill was robbed. Bank employees reported that the suspect was a white male, wearing a dark-colored shirt and a Dallas Cowboys baseball cap, carrying a tan satchel. Just after the robbery, a witness reported seeing an individual matching this description get into a black vehicle that was parked nearby, and flee the area.

Solving the school supplies cost issue

Previously, we brought you a story about the rising cost of school supplies. In Hernando County, the school year commenced on August 14, 2017, so all month, social media has been exploding with adorable pictures as well as parents complaining about all the money they had to spend. On top of new clothes or uniforms, parents have to purchase school supplies for their children. Because of major budget cuts in the school system through the years, parents are being required to pay for so much that the schools used to provide.

Tired of hearing all the negativity in the news? Here’s a really uplifting story! Lift More Fitness, a gym devoted to power-lifting and bodybuilding, off of SR 50 in Brooksville, is helping some local residents lift their spirits. Owner, Mike Oliva, wanted to do something positive for Hernando county and make a difference, so his gym is currently offering free membership to Special Olympics athletes. They can work out for free any day, any time, but Mondays and Wednesdays are specifically dedicated to them. Most usually show up around 5 pm.

New precision cancer fighting technology unveiled

Varian, the world’s leader in producing radiation oncology equipment, has manufactured a new linear accelerator called the “VitalBeam” and Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute, located at 7154 Medical Center Dr. Spring Hill 34608, is the first in the area to obtain this impressive new technology. On Thursday, August 17, 2017, they held an Open House to introduce our community to the Varian VitalBeam Linear Accelerator.

On Saturday Aug. 12, 2017, The Special Olympics Florida-Hernando County participated in the Area Games competition at Highlander Pool in Dunedin. The 2017 Area 6 Games featured athletes from Pinellas, Pasco, Sumter, Citrus and Hernando Counties. The Special Olympics organization helps people with disabilities participate as productive, respected members of society. Their goal is to offer all members a fair opportunity to cultivate and exhibit their skills and talents through sports training and competition.
