Get to know some GRADUATES

At the end of May high schools in the area celebrated their graduates. A few of these high school graduates finished high school with a two year college degree, by taking advantage of the dual enrollment program with PHSC or St. Petersburg College. The graduates are heading to college, starting businesses, and starting careers. There are some graduates that are entering the armed forces.

Many are leaving our community and some will return as doctors, lawyers, businessmen and veterans.

Here are two notable graduates.

Hernando's 3rd grade scores rise again

BROOKSVILLE – On May 19, the Florida Department of Education released the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) scores for third grade. Hernando County Schools’ results reveal significant improvement in increasing the number of students deemed proficient and lowering the number of students with learning gaps.

• The number of students who earned a level 3 and above rose from 58% in 2016 to 61% in 2017 and exceeds the state average of 58% by 3 percentage points.

National Nurses’ Week is celebrated annually nationwide the first week of May to honor the services that the nursing profession makes to the community.

According to Rachel Provau, Chief Nursing Officer at Bayfront Health Spring Hill, there are a number of ways in which Bayfront t Health Systems takes part in this celebration at both their local branches.

“At the beginning of the week the staff votes on ‘Best of…’ for all nursing categories. On Friday we have a little party in the cafeteria and hand out gift cards to the winners. We also hand out nursing awards.”

I’ve never been to a Broadway show or even an off-Broadway show, but the rendition of classic Peter Pan given by students at Chocachatti Elementary School on Monday, May 8 could give any of these venues a run for their money.

Under the direction of teachers Rhonda Bowers, Irmarie Kraft and Nancy Kraus, the cast of “dozens,” made up of third through fifth graders performed on a professional level – proof that seven months of three-times-a-week rehearsals paid off.

Fox Chapel Middle School employee arrested for sexual battery on a minor

On Monday May 22nd, a student at Fox Chapel Middle School reported to the school resource officer inappropriate contact between an adult who worked at the school and a student.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated the claim, speaking both with the young victim and the suspect. They arrested Marcus Wells, 34, on the night of May 23rd. He was employed at Fox Chapel Middle School as an in school suspension monitor. He is charged with multiple counts of sexual battery on a minor 12 - 18 years of age by a person who is in familial or custodial authority.

New College of Florida

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, May 25, 2017......... For the first time in its 57-year history, New College of Florida will award graduate degrees to students on Friday.

The Sarasota-based college announced that seven students will earn master's degrees as the class of 2017 participates in commencement ceremonies.

The students are earning their diplomas in New College's data-science program, which began in 2016 and represented the first time the small liberal arts honors college, which has about 875 students, had offered a graduate degree.
