Some Hernando County families in need will be receiving Christmas dinners and toys this year, thanks to the joint efforts of local residents with big hearts. Athena Sanchez and Jessica Cecil of AJLV Events will be hosting a Holiday Shopping Event with Mom & Pop Polarbear Helping Families on Sunday November 29th from 10 am to 4 pm at 10181 N. Broad St in Brooksville. The location will be donated by Christina and Alan Jernigan, owners of Jernigan Towing.

When you examine the breeds that are currently in the Hernando County animal shelter, many are pitbulls. According to Emily Weiss, Vice President of Research and Development for the ASPCA, the American Pit Bull is number 1 on the list of the top ten most common breeds in shelters throughout the US:

On Saturday evening at the Hernando Performing Arts Center, the sophistication and talent of Barbara Streisand graced the stage. It was the season opener for the Hernando Performing Arts Center Guild.

Carla DelVillaggio, Barbara Streisand tribute artist, performed a wide range of Streisand songs with impeccable accuracy. She trained as a lyric soprano and has performed for dignitaries around the world.

Hernando County Kennel Club Annual Fall AKC Dog Show

Hernando County Kennel Club held their 21st and 22nd, All-Breed Dog Shows, Obedience & Rally Trials last weekend Nov. 7th and 8th at the Florida Classic Park in Brooksville.

“We have been showing for eighteen years, we do obedience classes, handling classes,” Cathy Choffey said. Choffey is one of the five members on the Board with Hernando County Kennel Club. “It’s a great place to come and meet the breeders.”

The park filled with a variety of breeds from Affenpinschers to Xoloizcuintli.

On Mariner in Spring Hill you can see the bright colored flashing lights illuminating the night sky. St. Frances Cabrini kicked off the 3rd Annual Parish Feast in Spring Hill on Thursday night, the start of four days and nights of great entertainment for the whole family.

Jennifer Vitale, her daughter Alea Spiridako and nephew Jay Morse took on the Magic Carpet, while Sabrina Machado, Jason Rodriguez and Josh Lopez, all friends from Spring Hill took a gentler option, The Fun Slide. “It was nice, we had fun,” Machano said.

Sunshine State Muscle Car Club, Fall Fling

Vintage Classic and Full Breed Muscle Cars filled the parking lots at Brooksville Transmissions Inc. and Complete Automotive Care off of Cortez Blvd in Brooksville, Sunday November 8, 2015.

There are a variety of car shows throughout the county, from Brooksville to Weeki Wachee. Recently Sunshine State Muscle Car Club held their Fall Fling Car Show.
Sunshine State Muscle Car Club has two car shows a year, Spring Fling in April and Fall Fling in November. Owners of vintage Fords to current 2015/2016 Dodge and Chevrolet muscle cars display the sleek designs of their ride.

Florida Agriculture and Wildlife Expo kicked off their annual four day event on November 5th, 2015 in Brooksville.

“We wanted to see more agriculture, equine, also educate the public more on agriculture not only just crops and livestock, but hunting, fishing and wildlife portions as well,” said Deanna Naugler, President of the Board.

There is no lack of photographers in Hernando County. They range from hobbyists to professionals with everything in between. However there is one particular group that is starting to take the spotlight.

The Hernando County Photographers group was formed with a “be different” mind set. Most photography groups have their formats, standards and guidelines. “I wanted a group where you can expand your vision, to step out of the box and discover new perspectives,” explained the group’s founder, Alice Mary Herden. Herden works as a freelance photographer and creative designer.

Recently, the annual Hernando Night Out event took place at the Target parking lot on Aerial Way. Also known as National Night Out, this event takes place across the country. The purpose of the event is to strengthen the police and community partnership to help build a safer community.

The event was no small affair. There were very few empty parking spots in the Target lot or the Kohl’s lot located across the street. A large portion was blocked off and rows and rows of vendors and interactive areas were set up.

Junior Service League to Host Masquerade Run

Last year  Batgirl (Allie Patak) and Nightwing (Evan Patak) were the top female and male 5k finishers respectively.  They celebrated with Ironman (Matthew Laurain), atop his shoulders.

If you enjoy running and dressing up in costume, then maybe you should consider taking part in the 3rd Annual Masquerade Masquerade Madness 5K, 10K, and 1 mile COSTUME run on October 17th. You’ll be able to don your favorite costume garb while running along Brooksville’s idyllic Good Neighbor Trail- both for a good cause. If neither running nor dressing up in costume appeals to you, then you may find some entertainment in watching others do so.
