History made in county girls hoops

In the aftermath of this week’s girls basketball district tournaments, two county teams remained alive, both celebrating unprecedented achievements within the history of their programs.

For the third time in four seasons, and the fourth time overall, Hernando Christian Academy has advanced to regionals. But this go-round brings a unique twist. On Thursday at First Academy-Leesburg, the Lady Lions collected their first district championship with a 41-28 triumph over Ocala-St. John Lutheran in the Class 2A, District 4 final.

Springstead’s Barker back for more

Last season, Tommy Barker received his first taste of the state wrestling meet. Only a few weeks into a new campaign, the Springstead sophomore hungers for a larger bite. Over his team’s first two tournaments, Barker has compiled a 12-0 mark with seven pins. Two Saturdays ago, he was the county’s lone champion at the 34th annual Kiwanis Invitational held at Hernando High.

When Wayne Withington starts throwing around comparisons to Monica Surrena, that’s not to be taken lightly. The Springstead coach guided his former swimmer on both the club and prep level, culminating in her reaching the FHSAA Finals as a senior two years ago. This season, Withington has invoked Surrena’s name when describing the potential of freshman Dakotah-Rae Chanthachoumpha.

Friday night in Hernando County, it was good to be a running back named Smith. A debate could probably go on for days over just who had the superior performance: Nature Coast’s DeShawn Smith or Central’s De’Vonta Smith.
