Boating in Florida organizes Weeki Wachee River cleanup

Boating In Florida held its monthly Weeki Wachee Cleanup last Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017. A chilly start to the day warmed up quickly, and the team of four volunteers led by Chris Cross and Darius Jones began at the headspring and paddled 5.5 miles to Roger’s Park, collecting trash in and along the banks of the Weeki Wachee river. Corporal Stephen Kelly of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office checked in with the team during his routine patrol.

PACE Center: Topic at School Board Workshop Plans underway for location at JD Floyd

At a School Board Workshop on Dec. 12, 2017, PACE Executive Director Gail Armstrong and Assistant Director Chris Lemon, along with four students from PACE spoke to the Hernando County School Board to discuss the program that will be coming to Hernando County in 2018.

Dr. Lori Romano recognized Senator Wilton Simpson as an advocate for increased mental health services for at-risk youth.

2017 Audubon Christmas Bird Count

On Dec. 14, 2017 the 118th annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count took place in Hernando County. Birders of all ages participated in the dawn to dusk count. Nationwide counts take place between Thursday Dec. 14, 2017 and Friday Jan. 5, 2018. The Christmas Bird Count was started by Dr. Frank Chapman, founder of the predecessor to Audubon Magazine as a way to promote conservation during Christmastime. Instead of hunting birds, he urged people to count them.

Brendan O’Connor, the Southwest Regional Volunteer Coordinator with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) led a group of local volunteers, which included students from an Odessa private school in building some rather large birdhouses at the Chinsegut Conservation Center last week.

In 2009, the FWC initiated a nest box monitoring program in north-central Florida to expand nesting opportunities for Southeastern American Kestrels (SEAK).

Remembering Doc Hensley: Service to God, Family, Community

Family, friends and community members gathered Monday night, Dec. 4, 2017, nearly filling the First Baptist Church of Brooksville to say goodbye to prominent Chiropractor Donald “Doc” Hensley. Doc was also known for his service to Brooksville in other capacities, serving for seven years as Director of Hernando Youth League, a member of the Hernando County School Board for eight years and football team doctor for over thirty years at Hernando High School.

Council votes 4-1 to not send letter to county commission for MSTU

Nov. 27, 2017 - Mayor Robert Battista began a special meeting, acknowledging a “real data dump that came in (Monday) afternoon” as he called on members of the council to approve or modify Monday night’s agenda. The agenda was approved as published, with the objective of deciding whether or not a letter would be sent to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) requesting consideration of an MSTU (Municipal Services Taxation Unit) for Sheriff’s Office services. This meeting followed an informational meeting last week (Nov. 22) with Ken Small, an expert on the use of MSTUs.

Hernando Beach Shallow Reef Project

The Hernando County Port Authority in cooperation with the Aquatics Services Department deployed more reef balls off the shore of Hernando Beach last Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017.

The reef locations are only seven miles offshore, in fairly clear water. Due to the close proximity to shore, and the Weeki Wachee and Hernando Beach boat ramps, the reefs are anticipated to provide an immediate benefit to anglers, as well as recreational and educational benefits to divers and students.

The 9th Annual Reagan Day dinner took place on Nov. 17 at the Silverthorn Country Club in Brooksville, Florida.  Reagan Day celebrations are fundraising events for the Republican party on local and state levels, and Friday’s speakers set the tone of diversity, with unified philosophy within the party.
