Council votes 4-1 to not send letter to county commission for MSTU

Nov. 27, 2017 - Mayor Robert Battista began a special meeting, acknowledging a “real data dump that came in (Monday) afternoon” as he called on members of the council to approve or modify Monday night’s agenda. The agenda was approved as published, with the objective of deciding whether or not a letter would be sent to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) requesting consideration of an MSTU (Municipal Services Taxation Unit) for Sheriff’s Office services. This meeting followed an informational meeting last week (Nov. 22) with Ken Small, an expert on the use of MSTUs.

Hernando Beach Shallow Reef Project

The Hernando County Port Authority in cooperation with the Aquatics Services Department deployed more reef balls off the shore of Hernando Beach last Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017.

The reef locations are only seven miles offshore, in fairly clear water. Due to the close proximity to shore, and the Weeki Wachee and Hernando Beach boat ramps, the reefs are anticipated to provide an immediate benefit to anglers, as well as recreational and educational benefits to divers and students.

County to rely on state for regulating medical marijuana facilities

The second and final public hearing was held at the Nov. 7, 2017 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting regarding the repealment of an earlier ordinance (2016-05) which allowed for county control of medical marijuana growing and dispensing facilities. New legislation by the state preempts counties and municipalities from regulating the facilities.

Len Sossamon introduced the appropriation Requests for 2018-19 State Legislature at the regular Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on October 24th.
State Representative Blaise Ingoglia asked the board to add two projects to the existing requests, due to his ability to secure funding for renovations to two existing firehouses. The money cannot be used to buy new apparatus or equipment, and cannot be used to build new stations.

At the Nov. 7, 2017 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) Meeting, Chinsegut Hill leaders Lisa Callea, President of Friends of Chinsegut, Inc. and Natalie Kahler, Manager of the Chinsegut Hill Retreat and Museum sought a five year renewal of their license.

1st public hearing: County will not ban medical marijuana facilities, state to regulate

At the Oct. 24, 2017 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, the first public hearing was held to repeal a local ordinance governing the licensing and location of medical marijuana facilities. The ordinance that was passed in May 2016 is preempted by a new statute passed last June (2017). Ultimately, future medical marijuana facilities will be regulated by the state regarding licensing, use and location. The statute also includes a clause for cities or counties to ban dispensaries.

Brianna Goble continues her recovery

18-year-old Brianna Goble was shot on October 5th at the Spring Haven Apartments. The bullet struck her in the face, and exited from the back of her neck. Being called a miracle, she was released from the hospital on October 19th, and continues to recover at home with her mother, Karen Dove. Karen posted the following on Facebook on October 25th.
